How the STAP band is calculated

What do the five assessment groups mean?

We look at the student’s STAP grades in the selected subject and period. We pay particular attention to frequent S grades to identify where the student needs support.

S — Intensive support needed

What it means

Grades frequently indicate difficulties. The student needs additional help with learning.

How the group is determined

At least 40% of grades are S — at least 4 out of every 10 grades.

S–T — Support and practice needed

What it means

Difficulties recur, or much of the assessed material still needs to be learned and reinforced.

How the group is determined

Between 20% and less than 40% of grades are S, or at least 60% of grades are S and T combined. If S reaches 40%, the student belongs to the S group.

T–A — Partly mastered, with some learning to reinforce

What it means

Some grades show that the student has a good grasp of the material, while other areas still need practice.

How the group is determined

More than 40% but less than 60% of grades are A and P combined, and fewer than 20% are S.

A–P — Mostly well mastered

What it means

Most grades show a good grasp of the material. Some difficulties still need attention.

How the group is determined

At least 60% of grades are A and P combined, and fewer than 20% are S. The P group criteria listed below have not yet been met.

P — Consistently high performance

What it means

The student consistently demonstrates advanced mastery.

How the group is determined

At least 80% of grades are P — at least 8 out of every 10 — and there are no S grades.
